Saturday
What a nice day! Lots to do …
Three eggs from pen #1 today. Total of 36 in the tray. Nothing in pen #4, where there should be all males. Nothing in pen #5, with the sole survivor of the partridge catch. But also nothing in pen #2 – and there has been one; and nothing in pen #3, still. Word from England is it may be too soon to expect the flood of eggs expected, so not to worry.
We postponed the quad-bike training for Shelly to another day.
The shorn sheep have been in and out of the paddock for a week, and tonight is supposed to be nice, so they are going to have a chance to stay out tonight. The shed door is open so if they want shelter, and can find there way inside, it’s available.
We had a visitor today. Just a huntsman spider, and the picture distorts it’s size against the background, but still impressive.
A bit of adventure during the slashing today. I tried to do some precision mowing between an outcrop of rocks and the trees. I had my attention on not hitting the rocks while backing up and didn’t watch where the bucket was. It caught a wattle and before I could disengage it, I had knocked it flat. The trunk is broken at the base so there is no chance of survival. I’ll move it in the next day or so. Otherwise, the slashing was a success. More to come – slashing, not broken trees.
Shelly got bit by an insect tonight. We didn’t catch it and she only caught a glimpse of it. About the size of her little finger nail, brown, legs not that long. But it really stung. When she got home, she treated it with the correct combination of essential oils which took the pain away and reduced the redness. We’ll watch it for the next couple of days.
Tomorrow, a short trip to the big smoke and a visit to our friend in Romsey. We’ll try the upper gate route; we need to be able to find our way home from Cope Williams tomorrow afternoon.
