Friday
Today dawned as a beautiful morning. The wind and the mist long gone. We should have suspected a good day; the sunset last night promised clear skies.
Two eggs today, both from pen #1. Which is good news: we are now getting eggs from pens #1-2. Nothing from #3 yet. And #4 has, we hope, all males and are not expecting any eggs. The solitary hen in pen #5 is still loose, but without a reliable source of food. I’ll move some food into the catching area tomorrow and Shelly and I will beat the bushes to coax her there where she can be netted and caged. Hoping for a nice day tomorrow.
We have seen three kangaroos from the house. Two last night just after dinner, and one this morning. We suspect that Morris is on patrol for kangaroos. We let him off the chain after dinner and he bounds around, occasionally barking and barking and barking. It’s dark enough so we cannot see what he sees, but it’s the right time for him to be on guard for wildlife, and chasing off any real or imagined specimens sighted.
Shelly got a chance to do put the sheep into the shearing shed tonight. She is so good, she might turn pro. The sheep took one look at her I-mean-business posture and ran into the shed.
Tomorrow, if nice, will be a full day of catching partridges, slashing, and teaching Shelly to drive a quad-bike. With a little time saved for sunsets and kangaroo spotting.
